We are a small, dedicated group that has tended an acre plus of land from the City of Carmel as a demonstration garden for California native plants for 25 years. Monthly meetings are held on the second Wednesday of each month at the home of Connie Stroud, 26407 Carmelo Street, Carmel. Our group is always glad to have new members!

The Beach Garden Project provides an opportunity to participate in hands-on, native plant restoration in the spectacular Monterey Bay Dunes. Created in 1992, the project has expanded year after year, involving thousands of volunteers in the yearly cycle of seed collection, propagation, outplanting, and weeding. The Monterey Dunes are regaining their original splendor as the non-native iceplant is controlled, and a broad diversity of blooming native species are planted. Other environmental benefits include the return of native animal species to the restored habitat, as well as the improved erosion control provided by the deep roots of native dune species. Beach Garden Project volunteers have grown and planted over 100,000 seedlings, transforming beaches around the Monterey Peninsula, including Carmel River Beach, Monterey, Seaside, and Marina State Beach, and Fort Ord Dunes State Park.
A dedicated group of 15-20 Beach Garden Project volunteers participate every Saturday during the restoration season (August-September and January-February, see calendar of activities.
The Beach Garden Project was created in 1992 by the Monterey Dunes Coalition, a consortium of non-profit groups, including the California Native Plant Society - Monterey Chapter, the Sierra Club (Ventana Chapter) and the Audubon Society of Monterey County.
